VAT Charges Explained

Last Updated: 31/12/2024

This page explains how Value Added Tax (VAT) may apply to orders and services made through the Piderico platform.

Piderico operates as a digital marketplace that connects customers with independent restaurants and venues. Restaurants are responsible for setting their own menu prices and for applying the correct VAT treatment to their products in accordance with the laws of the country where the order is fulfilled.

1. Platform Role

Piderico provides technology that allows customers to discover restaurants, place orders, and make bookings. The supply of food and beverages is made directly by the restaurant to the customer.

Restaurants are responsible for:

  • Setting menu prices
  • Determining applicable VAT rates
  • Complying with local tax regulations
  • Issuing receipts where required

Piderico does not determine the VAT classification of food or beverage items listed by restaurants.

2. VAT on Food and Beverages

VAT treatment for food and beverages varies depending on the country, the type of food, and how it is supplied. In many European countries:

  • Basic food items may be subject to reduced VAT rates
  • Restaurant meals and prepared food may have different VAT treatment
  • Beverages and alcoholic drinks are often taxed at the standard VAT rate

Restaurants are responsible for applying the correct VAT rate to each menu item offered on the platform.

3. VAT in the United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom the standard VAT rate is generally 20%.

  • Many basic food items sold for home consumption may be zero rated
  • Hot takeaway food and restaurant meals are generally subject to the standard VAT rate
  • Alcoholic beverages and soft drinks are typically taxed at the standard VAT rate
4. Examples of VAT Rates in European Countries

VAT rates vary across the European Union. The following examples illustrate typical VAT rates applied to restaurant services and food items in certain countries.

  • Spain – Reduced rate around 10% for restaurant food, standard rate around 21%

VAT rates may change over time as governments update tax regulations.

5. VAT on Platform Fees

Piderico may charge platform service fees for facilitating orders, bookings, or payments. Where applicable, VAT may be applied to these platform fees in accordance with the tax laws of the country where the service is supplied.

6. Price Transparency

Prices displayed on the platform generally include any VAT applied by the restaurant unless otherwise stated. Customers are able to review the full price of their order before confirming payment.

7. Changes to VAT Rules

VAT regulations and rates may change. Restaurants are responsible for updating their pricing and VAT treatment where required by law.
